One Billion Rising

Today isn’t just Valentine’s Day. It’s also One Billion Rising -- a global day of action to demand an end to violence against women.

Today isn’t just Valentine’s Day. It’s also One Billion Rising -- a global day of action to demand an end to violence against women.

V-Day, Eve Ensler’s organization, championed this global day of action in response to the horrifying fact that one billion women, or one out of every three women on the planet, will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. Eve is asking people to walk out, dance, and rise up to show the world that violence against women and girls can’t be marginalized any longer.

The idea has caught fire as thousands have signed up to start a rising all around the world. There will be dancing as far north as Greenland and as far south as New Zealand. From actors to NBA stars, members of parliament to city mayors, corporations to non-profits, people are answering the call. The police in Bhutan will be rising, but so will the Duns Rugby Club in Scotland. Women will be dancing in Pakistan -- where it’s illegal to dance in public.

The global traction behind this movement speaks not only to the extreme importance and relevance of this issue, but also the power of digital media to connect activists across borders, oceans, and cultures.

It’s for both of those reasons that we were so excited to partner with V-Day. We worked with them to develop a multi-channel digital strategy to activate their network of grassroots supporters and mobilize millions more to join the movement. We began with a Tumblr to start building momentum. Then we built a responsive website, so visitors could find what they needed, regardless of their device. Now, with the BSD Tools event module, people from all around the world can search for a rising near them or start one of their very own -- in multiple languages.

Now videos, photos, and tweets are pouring in from all over the world -- and they’re still coming.

So today we rise with the billion. Join us: #1billionrising
