BSD is happy to announce that we've received two W3 Awards for our video work for Freedom to Marry. The W3 Awards recognize "the very best in Websites, Web Advertising, Mobile Sites/Apps and Web Video."
"The Story of Monica and Naomi" was awarded "Best in Show" and "Gold" in the Web Video category from a field of more than 3,000 entries. Fewer than 10% of all entries are selected as Gold Winners, and Best in Show honors are given to only the top 1% of all work entered.
A little background on the project: Our video was created to kick off Freedom to Marry's campaign "Freedom to Serve, Freedom to Marry." Freedom to Marry partnered with the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network to bring attention to the negative effects that DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act) has on military families.
We rooted our story in anecdotes from our own relationships, visualized it with illustration, and anchored the story in the familiar Facebook Timeline format. In less than seven days, the video was clicked more than 50,000 times and shared on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and traditional media. More important, 78% of viewers watched all the way through to the call to action. Visits to the website surged 51%, and an impressive 81% of those visits converted to petition signatures — far exceeding industry averages. Ultimately, 25,000 signatures were sent to Congress.
A big thanks goes out to everyone who shared "The Story of Monica and Naomi" and signed the petition supporting marriage equality.
