Unions Fighting Together for Justice

Over the past few weeks, the BSD London office has been supporting the campaign to win compensation for the victims of Pleural Plaques - a disease caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos.

Since compensation for this terrible disease was revoked in 2007, trade unions have been campaigning to win justice for their members, thousands of whom were suffering due to the negligence of their employers. Unions Together, a BSD client representing all Labour-affiliated unions to the party, decided to take the campaign online using BSD's tools and strategic advice.

The project included a powerful and moving video, in which victims told their own stories of how pleural plaques had affected their lives.

Alan Clark - one of the sufferers who spoke of his own experiences in the video - died shortly after filming. He was determined to record a message, and asked his union to use his story to get justice for the thousands of others still living with the disease.

The video was launched at the Trades Union Congress annual conference in September, where delegates voted unanimously to support the campaign. Unions Together used the video to launch a web and email campaign to collect signatures on a petition demanding justice. It's been shown on BBC news multiple times and has featured in numerous newspapers, articles and blogs.
