America’s Voice Helps “Drop Dobbs”
For years, Lou Dobbs used his CNN and radio programs as a platform to spread controversial and hateful views about immigrants, the Hispanic community, and proponents of immigration reform. In recent months, Dobbs continued to question President Obama's citizenship, months after every other legitimate news outlet had dropped it as a story.
This past summer, BSD client America's Voice decided enough was enough. Working with a coalition of like-minded organizations, America's Voice helped create Drop Dobbs, an innovative campaign to pressure CNN to drop "Lou Dobbs Tonight" from its lineup. The campaign utilized a savvy, bilingual blend of online and offline tactics to build opposition to Dobbs's hateful views and pressure his advertisers to remove support from his program.
It worked: Last Tuesday, Lou Dobbs announced he was resigning from CNN, effective immediately.
America's Voice played a crucial role in the victory. After CNN refused to air a TV ad created by the coalition, America's Voice repeatedly messaged its members to raise the funds -- in $25 increments -- to air it on CNN's rival MSNBC. America's Voice members also sent hundreds of letters to CNN's president, Jonathan Klein, slamming his network for refusing to take their ad money and urging him to watch the ad himself on MSNBC.
Previously, BSD worked with America's Voice to launch the satirical site DobbsForGovernor.com. We're proud to have helped them remove Dobbs from CNN for good.
Congratulations to America's Voice: You helped win a major fight against hateful views on the U.S. airwaves.
